Box Score WICHITA, Kan. ? A school record crowd of 6,122 saw the
Shockers fight back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Missouri State, 3-2, Friday
night inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers won by scores of 30-19, 26-30,
24-30, 30-25 and 15-10, in a thrilling five-game match.
With the win the Shockers move into sole possession of first
place in the conference standings, moving to 22-4 on the season, 13-1 in Valley
play. Missouri State drops to 12-2 in conference action with the loss, and 23-4
overall with two weekends left of the regular-season.
Three Shockers had double-digit kills on the evening, including
Stephanie Tokarz' team-high 15. She was followed by 14 kills each by Emily
Stockman and Sara Lungren. Three Bears finished the night with double-digit
kills as well, with Jamie Adams leading the way with a match-high 17 followed
by Sara Thomas' 13 and Shayla Patrick's 10 kills. Abby Harsh led all players
with 54 assists, while Stockman and Lungren each turned in double-doubles with
18 and a match-best 27 digs respectively.
WSU held Missouri State to a .000 hitting percentage in the
final game, and managed to overcome 15.5 team blocks by the Bears. Missouri
State posted a 11-4 edge in service aces thanks to a match-high seven from
Katelyn Panzau, but the Bears committed five more hitting errors than the
Shockers on the night , many coming in crucial situations in the match.
The Shockers grabbed an early 9-5 lead in game one and took
a 13-9 advantage after a kill by Sara Lungren.
A kill by Emily Stockman gave the Shockers a 23-13 lead and WSU won the
game 30-19 on a block by Angela Jakubov and Abby Harsh.
The teams battled back-and-forth in game two until the Bears
grabbed a 9-6 lead after a block by Shayla Patrick and Cara Hackmann. MSU increased the lead to 12-9 after a kill
by Patrick, but the Shockers stormed back to take a 13-12 lead after a
Stephanie Tokarz kill. The teams traded
points until a Harsh and Jakubov block gave the Shockers a 19-16 lead. A Hackmann block tied the score at 20 and the
Bears took a 21-20 lead after a kill by Jamie Adams. Another kill by Adams increased the Bears
lead to 24-21 and a kill by Katelyn Panzau gave MSU a 26-22 advantage. The Shockers pulled to within 26-28 on a kill
by Jakubov, but the Bears won the game 30-26 on a kill by Sara Staubach.
The Bears took control of game three early as back-to-back
service aces by Panzau put them up 18-11.
A kill by Harsh pulled the Shockers to within 16-22 and to 21-24 after a
Bear hitting error. MSU regrouped to
take a 30-24 win.
WSU raced out to a 5-1 lead in game four, but the Bears pulled
to within 9-13 after a kill by Sara Thomas and to 14-16 after a block. MSU tied the score at 16 after a Shocker
hitting error and the teams went back-and-forth until the Shockers went ahead
22-19 on a Bear hitting error. The teams
again traded points until a Tokarz kill gave the Shockers a 30-25 win.
Back-to-back service aces by Panzau gave the Bears a 4-2
lead in game five and a block increased it to 8-5. The Shockers came back to tie it at nine
after a Bear hitting error and took a 10-9 lead after another error. A Stockman kill put the Shocks up 11-9 and a
solo block by Tokarz gave WSU a 13-9 lead.
WSU won the game 15-10 on a kill by Stockman.
The Shockers are next in action on Nov. 9-10 for the final
home matches of the season. WSU takes on
Drake on Friday and Creighton on Saturday.
Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
