EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Wichita State men's basketball team snapped a seven-game road losing streak by defeating Evansville, 66-61, in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday night. The win gives the Shockers (14-8, 5-6) their first MVC road victory of the season, while the Purple Aces fell to 12-10 on the season and 5-6 in the Valley.

 

Wichita State's Sean Ogirri led the team in scoring with 13 and Kyle Wilson followed with 11. Eight points a piece were added by P.J. Couisnard, despite an injured thumb, and Phillip Thomasson, despite early foul trouble in the second half. Ryan Martin led in rebounding with seven boards.

 

After going into halftime tied at 25, Wichita State came out of the break and quickly took control with seven unanswered points, five from Martin and two free throws by Ogirri. Evansville cut the lead down to one with three consecutive field goals of their own. A four-point play by Ogirri sparked a 12-3 run that extended WSU's lead, 44-34.

 

Evansville came within five before Wichita State went on a 9-0 run to gain its biggest lead of 14. UE refused to go away as they answered with a 7-1 run capped by Kyle Anslinger's first points of the game, a three, with 49 seconds remaining. The Shockers held off the Aces down the stretch at the free throw line, going 9-10 from the stripe.

 

Evansville's Matt Webster had a game-high 15 points and led the Aces in rebounds with six. Bradley Strickland and Jason Holsinger added 13 each.

 

Wichita State shot 48.8 percent on the game and 73.1 percent from the free throw line. The Shockers out- rebounded the Aces 35-19.

 

Tuesday, the Shockers travel to Northern Iowa to take on the Panthers at 6:05 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
