Drake Edges Shockers in Second Half

1/25/2007 1:00:00 AM

The Drake Bulldogs (6-12, 1-7) secured their first Missouri Valley Conference win, 69-61, over Wichita State (7-11, 2-6) Thursday night at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Despite leading by six at the half, the Shockers were overcome by Drake's 66.7 percent second half shooting.

Antionette Wells led the Shockers with 12 points, followed by Kyrie Kinder's 10. Kiki Stephens, Marcy Sudbeck and Wells brought down nine rebounds each. Lexee McDonnell had four assists and Daria Frazier had two steals.

Drake's Brandy Dahir and Lindsay Whorton combined for 50 of the Bulldogs' 69 points, both playing over 39 minutes of the game. Only three other Drake players scored. Dahir had a game-leading 29, while Whorton added 21 and led the Bulldogs in rebounding with seven.

The Shockers led 51-46 at the 12:19 mark on a Kinder three-pointer, but a 23-10 Drake run in the final 12 minutes gave the Bulldogs an advantage. With a layup by Kaniesha Agee, Drake took the lead and never looked back with seven minutes remaining. Wichita State came within four with 58 seconds left in the game due to a Taylor Steven three, but Drake added four free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.

Wichita State had their largest lead, 13-6, at 12:35 of the first half after a run of seven unanswered points. Drake fought back to tie the game at the 10:42 mark and temporarily took the lead shortly after. The Shockers responded with an 8-1 run in the last two minutes of the half, capped by a last second Frannie Vathauer three, to take WSU into the locker room on top, 37-31.

Wichita State out-rebounded Drake 45-27, and the Shockers turned 21 offensive rebounds into 18 second chance points. WSU shot 47 percent in the first half and 31 in the second, for a total of 39.3 percent on the night. The Shockers held the Bulldogs to 40 percent shooting in the first, but Drake exploded with 66.7 percent in the second half, leaving them with 51 percent for the game.

The Shockers wrap up the trip with a 4:05 p.m., game at Creighton (6-12, 3-4) on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on KNSS 1330 AM with Shane Dennis calling the action and can be heard worldwide on www.shockerradio.com.
