Shockers Bounce Braves, 73-60

1/19/2007 1:00:00 AM

Bradley's Erika Nelson led all players with a career-high 31 points, but Wichita State's Kiki Stephens posted a season-high 19 while Antionette Wells chipped in her sixth double-double of the season as the Shockers (7-9, 2-4) ended a two-game skid with a 73-60 victory over the Braves (6-11, 2-4) Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers started the game on an impressive 14-4 run, helped in part by a 7-0 run to open the contest, while forcing Bradley to miss its first six shots from the field. WSU opened the lead to as many as 12 in the early minutes, after Kyrie Kinder connected on a basket with 12:13 left in the half to give the Shockers a 18-6 lead.

Bradley answered with a 10-2 run to close the Shocker lead to 22-20 following a steal and basket by Jen Brown with just under eight minutes left and two three-pointers by Nelson, trimming the Shocker lead to just two and forcing WSU to burn a timeout with 7:16 left.

The Braves tied the game with just under seven minutes in the first following a Krumweide layin that evened the game at 22-22, and took the lead following another Nelson three that gave the Braves a 25-24 advantage with 5:42 left in the first.

The teams traded baskets, and the lead, for much of the remainder of the half as the Shockers took a 33-30 lead into the break.

After starting the game 0-for-6 from the field, Bradley made 11-of-21 for the rest of the half, good for 52 percent shooting. Wichita State shot 45 percent from the field in the first frame and had nine steals, but shot 2-for-10 from three-point range.

WSU opened the second half in the same manner as it started the first, as the Shockers raced out to a 12-point lead fueled by a 11-2 run to open the half, and following McDonnell's second three-pointer of the night led 44-32 with just under 15 minutes left in the half.

The Shocker defense was again the story, limiting Bradley to 1-of-10 shots from the field early in the second half but the Braves continued to do just enough to stay within striking distance.

Another Nelson three-pointer with just under 11 to play got Bradley to within eight at 49-41, and her 28th point of the night, another three-pointer, got the Braves to within six at 50-44 before Whitney Rice connected on a basket to push the lead back out to 52-44, with 8:18 left in regulation.

WSU then used a 7-2 run to push the lead back out to 13 following a Wells layin that gave the Shockers a 59-46 lead with 4:57 left in the second. Stephens' basket with 2:53 left gave Wichita State a 63-51 lead and the Shockers never looked back, finishing the game with two layups from Wells and going 6-8 from the line down the stretch to secure the 73-60 victory.
