Porter opened the game with a three-pointer on the Bluejays' first possession for a quick 3-0 lead. It was CU's largest lead of the game and did not last long. A 17-foot jumper by Wilson followed by a three-pointer from Ogirri gave the WSU the 5-3 lead with 18 minutes to go in the half. An Anthony Tolliver jumper pulled the Bluejays within one, 9-8, before a Wilson jumper sparked an 8-0 run to give WSU its largest lead of the game, 17-8, with just over 13 minutes to go.
CU answered back, going on a 12-1 run of its own to take what would be their last lead of the game, 20-18, at the 8:26 mark. A Wilson three-pointer started another burst of offense for the Shockers, going on a 10-3 run for a 28-23 lead. Funk hit a runner in the lane as time expired, but WSU led 32-30 going into the break.
Wilson led the way for WSU with 18 points in the first half on 8-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-2 from the three-point line. As a team, WSU shot 46 percent and held CU to just 41 percent.
Porter scored on the Bluejays' first possession of the second half to tie the score, 32-32. Ogirri responded with back-to-back threes and P.J. Couisnard grabbed a steal and a layup to give the Shockers a 40-32 lead with 16:29 left. CU answered again, rattling off a 12-4 run over next two minutes to tie the score at 44.
Both teams battled back and forth, answering a run with a run of their own. With just over a minute left, Phil Thomasson sank two free-throws to give the Shockers a 59-56 lead. After being fouled on a three-point attempt, Funk only made one of three free-throws to pull CU within three, 60-57, with 20 seconds to play. Couisnard blocked a last second effort by Funk to hold on to the 62-59 win.
“We beat a really good team tonight, a team that has been playing at a high level,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “I never thought 3-4 in the league would feel so good, but to be 1-4 and get there by beating a good team.”
WSU shot 55 percent in the second half and 50 percent in the game while holding the Bluejays to just 44 percent for the game. The Shocker defense also forced 14 turnovers and collected 11 steals.
“I think we feel like we have our swagger back now,” said Wilson. “We were kind of hanging our heads after losing that stretch of games. Now we've won two in a row and I think we're back to our old selves and just improving from here.”
The Shockers are back in action Thurs., Jan. 18 as they travel to Normal, Ill., to take on Illinois State. Tip-off is at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Kansas Now 22.
