Box Score The Wichita State men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 76-64 win over Chicago St. (1-2) Tuesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
Senior Kyle Wilson led five Shockers in double-figures, finishing with 17 points. Fellow senior Karon Bradley was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line en route to scoring 13 points. P.J. Couisnard and Sean Ogirri each finished with 12 points. Senior Ryan Martin also chipped in for 12 points, a new career-high at WSU.
The Cougars were led by David Holston's game-high 19 points. Aaron Williams scored 13 points while Michael Henderson and Royce Parran finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Defense dictated the early minutes of the game as each team was held scoreless until the 17:56 mark when Ogirri hit the first of his four three-pointers. Ogirri hit two more in a row from behind the arc to fuel a 13-4 run. CSU answered with a quick 6-2 run of it's own to pull within four, 15-11, with 9:24 left in the half.
The Cougars stayed close until WSU freshman Gal Mekel drove in for a layup and hit a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to give WSU a 30-19 lead, it's largest of the half. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half as the Shockers went into the locker room with a 34-27 lead.
CSU finished the half shooting 43 percent from the field, including just 1-of-5 from 3-point range. The Shockers only shot 42 percent but hit 5-of-8 from behind the arc and out-rebounded the Cougars 18-12 at the half.
After only scoring two points in the first half, Wilson established himself down-low scoring six straight points, to spur a 10-2 run to open the second half. CSU's defense stepped up and quickly cooled the Shockers, going on a 12-1 run to cut the WSU to four, 45-41, with 12:41 to play.
The Cougars got as close as two, after a three-point play by Holston made the score 53-51, with 5:55 left. Wilson answered his first three-pointer of the season to spark a 9-0 run that was capped by a thunderous dunk by Martin that brought the sold-out crowd to its feet.
Holston hit back-to-back three's to pull the Cougars within five, but Ogirri answered with his fourth three-pointer of the game and the Shockers pulled away for a 76-64 final.
“Our defense was pretty good,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “They just kept making plays when they had to make plays. Our defense was carrying us.”
WSU heated up in the second half, shooting 52 percent. Matt Braeuer tied a career-high with seven assists as the Shockers shared the ball well, piling up 19 assists as a team. P.J. Couisnard helped WSU out-rebound CSU, 42-30, by pulling down 10 boards, three of which were offensive rebounds.
“This was a tester game,” Wilson said. “The first couple of games we coasted through. This was the first time we had to face any adversity this season. They were a good, athletic team.”
The Shockers will be back in action Sat., Nov. 18, as the team travels to Fairfax, Va., for its first road game of the season against George Mason. Saturday's game will mark the third meeting between the teams in the last 10 months. Tip-off is at 3 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
