Wichita, Kan.- The Wichita State men's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2006-07 exhibition season with a 87-62 win over Emporia State (0-1), Wednesday evening inside Charles Koch Arena.
Five Shockers finished in double-figures led by senior Kyle Wilson's 17 points. Phillip Thomasson and Karon Bradley each connected for 15 points while Gal Mekel and P.J. Couisnard finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Donta Watson led all-scorers with 19 points for the Hornets.
WSU opened the game on an 8-0 run in which four different players scored for the Shockers. The Hornets were held scoreless until the 16:13 mark when Ed Desir hit a layup and was fouled by Couisnard. WSU extended its lead with solid defense. The Shockers held ESU without a field goal for a nine-minute stretch late in the half. WSU went on a 20-8 run during that stretch and went into the locker room with a 42-21 halftime lead.
ESU finished the half shooting just 20 percent from the field, and were 1-of-14 from three-point range. WSU heated up toward the end of the first half and finished 14-of-27 from the field.
The Shockers came out firing in the second half, fueled by two quick three-pointers from Couisnard. Bradley connected from behind the arc and Wilson added a long jumper to give WSU a 57-26 lead with 16:14 remaining.
A coast-to-coast Matt Braeuer layup gave WSU a 33-point advantage, its largest of the game, with 14:39 to play. The Hornets began to heat up in the second half as well. Watson and DeAndre Townsend led an ESU comeback that cut the Shockers lead to 17, 75-58, with 3:51 to play.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Mekel removed all hopes of a Hornet comeback and put the Shockers up 81-58 with just 2:05 remaining. Freshmen Arbry Butler and Chris Brown connected on layups for their first points at WSU to ice the game.
“All in all I was pleased,” head coach Mark Turgeon said. “It got us in better shape but was still have a ways to go.”
WSU shared the ball well, compiling 20 assists on 28 baskets. The Shockers also won the battle of the boards, finishing the game with 43 rebounds compared to 36 for the Hornets.
“I thought offensively in the second half we shared the ball well,” Turgeon said. “Although we didn't guard as well as we should have.”
WSU will finish up the exhibition season Nov. 6 as they host Fort Hays State at 7 p.m.
