WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State held Florida Atlantic without a made field goal over the final 11:46 to run away with a dominant 88-70 win over Florida Atlantic on Senior Day.
Wichita State (21-10, 13-5) closed the regular season with six straight wins and locks up the No. 2 seed and a triple bye in next week's American Conference Championship. The 13 conference wins are the most since 2018.Â
On a night when Wichita State honored its three seniors (
Karon Boyd,
Kenyon Giles and
Emmanuel Okorafor), it was a sophomore that stole the show.
Dillon Battie recorded his first career double-double behind a career-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. He was 9-for-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line, while also knocking down a three-pointer.
Giles scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half. Okorafor added a career-high 16 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.
Karon Boyd chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and four assists and
TJ Williams finished with 10 off the bench.
Florida Atlantic shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, but the Shockers' defense suffocated the Owls after halftime. FAU was just 7-of-24 from the field. Wichita State scored 45 points in the second half on 56 percent shooting. Wichita State also connected on 11-of-12 free throw attempts in the game.
Wichita State extended its nation-leading streak of games with 10 or more offensive rebounds to 25 in a row, as they grabbed 12 against one of the nation's top defensive rebounding teams.
Wichita State forced 15 turnovers - 12 of them resulting in steals.
The Shockers jumped out to an early lead when Battie tipped in an offensive rebound and Giles followed with a pull-up jumper to make it 4-0 less than two minutes into the game. Florida Atlantic quickly responded, using a hot start from Kanaan Carlyle to swing momentum. Carlyle scored 20 of his game-high 26 before halftime.
Carlyle hit a pair of three-pointers and scored eight straight FAU points during a stretch that gave the Owls a 16-10 lead with 13:52 remaining in the half — their largest advantage of the game.Â
Wichita State answered behind its interior presence.
Will Berg and Okorafor combined for multiple baskets around the rim while the Shockers generated second-chance opportunities through aggressive offensive rebounding.
Midway through the half, the Shockers chipped away.
Michael Gray Jr. knocked down a transition three-pointer off a Battie steal to cut the deficit to one, and Okorafor followed with a fast-break dunk to keep the pressure on.
Despite Wichita State's runs, Carlyle continued to carry the Owls offensively, finishing the first half with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including three triples.Â
The teams traded baskets in the closing minutes before Wichita State grabbed the momentum just before the buzzer. After a missed three from Giles, Berg tipped in a rebound with one second remaining, giving the Shockers a 43-41 halftime lead.
Wichita State came out of halftime determined to establish control in the paint.
Okorafor opened the scoring with a turnaround jumper and Battie added another interior basket as the Shockers traded the lead with FAU early in the half. The Owls briefly went back in front when Carlyle converted a fast-break three to make it 53-51, but Wichita State quickly answered.
A three-pointer from Boyd at the 13:04 mark gave the Shockers a 58-57 lead, igniting a decisive run. Moments later Boyd drilled another triple from the top of the key, and Battie converted a second-chance layup to stretch the lead to six.
The momentum continued to build.
Okorafor finished a layup inside, Boyd scored off a turnover, and
Dre Kindell added a pull-up jumper as Wichita State capped an 11-2 run, pushing the lead to 73-62 with 7:38 remaining.
From there the Shockers never looked back.
Giles delivered the dagger with a fast-break three-pointer and Battie punctuated the surge with a breakaway windmill dunk after a steal, extending the advantage to 13.
A dunk from Okorafor and a late slam by
Noah Hill sealed the 18-point victory, the Shockers' largest lead of the game.
