49ers Surge Past Shockers

WICHITA, Kan. -- Charlotte scored 19 runs over the final five innings to erase an early 4-0 deficit, defeating Wichita State 19-6 on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

The 49ers (15-8, 1-1) banged out 22 hits, scoring four runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, sixth in the seventh and seven in the ninth after Shocker starter Brady Hamilton put zeroes on the board in the first four frames.

Charlotte catcher Cale Stricklin finished 4-for-4 with nine RBI, tying a program record. He and Dylan Koontz each homered twice for the 49ers.

Wichita State (16-9, 1-1) used small ball and some sloppy Charlotte defense to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. After Kaleb Duncan doubled and Owen Rush singled with one out, Ethan Gonzalez laid down a well-placed bunt up the first base line that was thrown away by Charlotte pitcher Drew Munn. The error scored Duncan and Rush to give Wichita State a 2-0 lead, then Anthony Cepeda followed with an RBI single into right to extend the advantage to 3-0. Another 49ers throwing error, this time from reliever Joseph Taylor, advanced Cepeda to third, where he scored on a Taylor wild pitch.

The 49ers tied the game in the fifth, getting a two-out, three-run homer from Koontz to level the scoreline at 4-4. They moved in front in the sixth when Stricklin yanked a two-run single into left for a 6-4 lead.

Wichita State got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Jaden Gustafson pushed home a run with an RBI groundout, but Charlotte put the game away with the six-run sixth and poured in seven more in the top of the ninth, highlighted by homers from Stricklin and Robert Nedry.

Hamilton (3-3) took the loss for Wichita State, allowing six runs over 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Taylor (4-2) earned the win for Charlotte, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings out of the 49ers bullpen.

The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 pm CT.
