WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State secured a series sweep of UAB with two wins (9-1 and 2-1) in a doubleheader Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.

The sweep for the Shockers (14-10, 4-2) against UAB (12-16, 0-6) was their first since sweeping Memphis in the 2024 season.

After a scoreless first inning,
Kinzey Woody opened the scoring with a two-run home run to center field, giving the Shockers a 2-0 lead. Later in the same frame,
Mackenzie Rooney plated
Johnna Schroeder on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Neither side scored in the third, but UAB broke
Ava Sliger's bid for a no-hitter in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

After two batters were hit by a pitch,
Gabby Scott doubled the Shocker lead to 6-1 with a three-run home run to left-center in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth,
Jodie Epperson ripped a double off the wall in left to score Schroeder, increasing the lead to 7-1. With the bases loaded,
Ausha Moore was hit by a pitch to force another run home.

The bases remained loaded for
Kammie Smith, who promptly fired a ball into the gap in left-center to score
Skyler Rodgers, ending the game for Wichita State.

Sliger (3-0) gave up just one hit in her five-inning complete game. Woody, Smith, Schroeder and
Trinity Allen all had two hits for the Shockers. Schroeder finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and a hit by pitch.

After the fireworks for the Shockers in the first game of the day, the bats fell silent for both teams early, with neither side scoring through the first four innings.

With two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, Allen roped a ball to the wall in left-center, bringing both runners home to break the scoreless tie.

UAB immediately answered in the top of the sixth against
Ryley Nihart, rallying with two outs to score a run, but Nihart induced a flyout to keep the Shockers ahead 2-1.

Clinging to the one-run lead in the top of the seventh, Nihart ended the Blazers' threat to secure the Game 2 victory and a series sweep for Wichita State.

Nihart (6-6) tossed her fifth complete game of the season, allowing one run on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Â
Allen's two-RBI double was the difference in the game. In the series against UAB, she went 6-for-9 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
