WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State put together a record-breaking performance on their way to a doubleheader sweep over Butler, defeating the Bulldogs 30-1 in game one and 6-4 in game two on Saturday at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers improved to 15-6 with the four-game sweep, while Butler dropped to 4-16.
Game One
Wichita State matched the largest margin of victory against a D1 opponent in program history, run-ruling Butler 30-1 in the first game of the twin bill.
It was a dominant effort both on the mound and at the plate for the Shockers, who held the Bulldogs to just two hits while racking up 22 of their own for the highest single-game total since the 2020 season.
After a scoreless first inning, the Shockers grabbed the lead with a two-out, three-run homer from
Ethan Gonzalez in the second against Butler starter Corbin Snyder (1-3). They plated two more runs in the third, this time via a
Jaden Gustafson solo homer and a
Jayson Jones RBI single that pushed the lead to 5-0.
Starter
Johnny Nuanez was electric for Wichita State, striking out eight batters over three scoreless innings. He gave way to
Reese Kortum (2-0) in the fourth, who allowed a run on Charlie Schebler's RBI single but did not concede any additional hits the rest of the way while striking out seven. The duo combined for 15 strikeouts and just three walks allowed.
While the WSU pitchers cruised, the bats were bludgeoning Butler pitching. After the Bulldogs lone run in the top of the fourth, the Shockers responded with eight of their own in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a two-run homer from
Alex Ulloa. They pushed across four more in the fifth on RBI singles from
Owen Washburn,
Kaleb Duncan and
Nolan Ganter that made the score 17-1.
The Shockers put the finishing touches on the offensive explosion with one of the biggest innings in program history, scoring 13 times in the bottom of the sixth. The 13 runs are the most in a single inning since Wichita State scored 14 in one frame against Alcorn State on April 6, 2011. Incredibly, the Shockers drew just two walks in the inning and had no extra-base hits, instead doing nearly all the damage on 10 singles. When the dust settled, the Shockers had extended the margin to 30-1 and Kortum breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to activate the run rule.
Nine Shockers scored multiple runs, led by five from
Jayson Jones. Six Shockers had multiple hits, and six also produced multiple RBI.
Game Two
Following the barrage of runs in game one, Wichita State's offense was held in check by Butler starter Brock Buckley before rallying late to pull out a 6-4 win.
The Shockers trailed 2-0 into the bottom of the sixth, as Butler scratched across one run in the second on an RBI single from Ian Choi and another in the sixth on a double steal. Buckley, meanwhile, retired 11 consecutive WSU hitters from the end of the second into the sixth, striking out nine along the way.
Wichita State finally got to the right-hander with two outs in the inning. Duncan and pinch hitter
Max Kaufer both knocked in runs with RBI singles, tying the game at 2-2.
The Bulldogs retook the lead in the top of the seventh on a passed ball, but WSU surged in front to stay with a four-run bottom of the inning. Gustafson put WSU on top with a two-run double to left-center, then one batter later Washburn slashed a double of his own into right for a 5-3 lead. Jones put the cherry on top of the frame by slapping an RBI single that scored Washburn, giving the Shockers a 6-3 cushion.
Butler pulled a run back on a solo homer from Schebler in the eighth, but that is all
Brady Pacha (2-0) allowed the rest of the way, as the right-hander tossed the final 2.1 innings to nail down the win.
WSU starter
Dax Sharp allowed one run over 2.1 innings, while
Caleb Reed followed with 2.2 frames allowing a run of his own.
Ryan Morrison and
Brady Owens combined for 1.2 innings with just one unearned run crossing the plate before handing off to Pacha.
