Shockers No-Hit, Walk Off Bluejays

ARLINGTON, Texas — Jade Sanders twirled a no-hitter, and Kinzey Woody blasted a walk-off grand slam in Wichita State's doubleheader sweep of Creighton, 8-0 and 8-4, on Saturday in Day 2 of the Boerner Invitational at Allan Saxe Field.

The Shockers (7-5) improved to 4-0 in the Boerner Invitational with the wins over Creighton (5-9).

Wichita State 8, Creighton 0 (6)

After two scoreless innings, Chloe Rhine blasted a solo home run to center field to open the scoring, her third of the season. Later in the inning, Brookelyn Livanec and Ausha Moore drew walks, and Gabby Scott ripped a single through the left side to score Livanec, doubling the lead.

In the fifth, the Shockers added another run as Skyler Rodgers sprinted home on an RBI groundout by Johnna Schroeder, making it 3-0.

After a scoreless fifth inning from Sanders, the Shocker offense got rolling, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Trinity Allen drove in the first run with an RBI double to right-center, scoring Jodie Epperson. Soon after, Livanec scored on an RBI groundout, and Mackenzie Rooney came home on an error, increasing Wichita State's lead to 6-0. Woody added the final two runs with a two-run double down the left-field line to make it 8-0.

Needing just three outs to complete the no-hitter, Sanders retired the three batters she faced with ease, securing both the shutout and the 22nd no-hitter in program history. It marked the first no-hitter since Chloe Barber's on May 5, 2024 vs. Memphis.

Sanders (1-2) became the third Shocker starter to toss a complete game on the weekend, striking out a season-high 10 batters while walking two.

Kammie Smith went 3-for-4 in the first game. Seven different Shockers recorded an RBI, with Woody the only player to drive in more than one run.

Wichita State 8, Creighton 4

The Shockers got right back to work in Game 2, scoring in the bottom of the second when Epperson launched a two-run homer over the right-field wall. Later in the inning, Rhine scored on an RBI groundout by Scott to make it 3-0.

In the top of the fourth, Creighton responded with a solo home run, recording its first hit and run of the game. Rooney answered for the Shockers with a home run of her own in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bluejays scored again in the fifth on an RBI single to pull within 4-2.

Creighton crept closer in the sixth with another RBI single, making it 4-3.

With one out in the seventh, the Bluejays tied the game 4-4 on an RBI groundout, but Ryley Nihart preserved the tie by inducing another groundout.

In the Shocker half of the seventh, Scott singled, Schroeder reached on an error and Smith laid down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs for Woody. The freshman promptly launched the ball over the center-field fence for her first career home run, a walk-off grand slam, giving the Shockers an 8-4 win.

Nihart (3-2) earned the win. Between starting and re-entering the game, she threw 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Three Shockers — Scott, Woody and Epperson — recorded two hits to lead the offense.
