PROVO, Utah – No. 18 BYU (5-0) used 12 service aces to defeat Wichita State 3-1 at the BYU Nike Invitational. The Cougars won by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-11.
Sydney Dunning led the Shockers (2-2) with 14 kills and 10 digs, while
Brooklyn Leggett added 10 kills and
Jordan Heatherly had 30 assists.
The first sent went back and forth until BYU used three-straight kills to take a 6-4 lead. Two kills from Leggett and a block from
Emerson Wilford pulled the Shocks within 8-7, but a 4-0 Cougar run pushed the lead to 12-7. After another kill from Leggett, BYU went on a 5-0 run highlighted by three-straight service aces to make the score 17-8. Down 20-10, the Shockers answered with a run of their own. A 6-0 run highlighted by kills from Dunning and Leggett cut the lead to 20-16. Back-to-back kills from Leggett closed the gap to 23-19, but BYU won the set 25-19. Leggett finished with seven kills in the set, but BYU used six service aces to take the set.
Two-straight kills from Leggett gave WSU a 7-6 lead in the second set, but BYU answered with four-straight to go in front 10-7. The Shockers used their own 3-0 run to tie the score at 10 and a block by Wilson and Heatherly put WSU up 14-13. BYU scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 23-15 lead and won the set 25-17.
A kill from
Olivia Cohee gave WSU a 6-5 lead in the third set, but BYU went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Two Dunning kills and a service ace helped put WSU in front 14-13, but the two teams went back and forth until a 6-0 Shocker run made the score 23-17. Highlights of the run included a
McKenzie Jones kill, a block by Jones and
Janaya Weitkemper and a
Katie Galligan service ace. BYU scored three-straight to pull within 23-20, but the Shockers closed out the set 25-21 on a kill by Jones.
The fourth set was all BYU early as the lead was as big as 10 at 14-4. An
Elinor Engel kill and Weitkemper service ace pulled WSU within 14-7, but BYU cruised to the 25-11 win.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 6 when they close out the BYU Nike Invitational against Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. CT.
