Shockers Outlast Northern Colorado

PROVO, Utah -- Wichita State got a combined 27 kills from middles Maddie Wilson and Elinor Engel to surge past Northern Colorado 25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-7 in the final match of the BYU Nike Invitational.

The Shockers (3-2) finish the competition with a 2-1 record, sandwiching wins over Incarnate Word and Northern Colorado around a loss to #18 BYU.

After trading set wins to reach the fifth and decisive stanza, Wichita State left little doubt in the final frame. A crushing 7-0 run stretched an already healthy lead to 14-4, giving WSU plenty of cushion. Northern Colorado (2-4) strung together three consecutive points to crawl within 14-7, but a Wilson kill sealed the deal.

The Shockers raced out of the gates with a comfortable first set win, lengthening their lead out to 23-13 by hitting .455 in the frame. The Bears tried to make things interesting by stringing together four straight points, but Brooklyn Leggett slammed a termination to secure the set.

Once again, WSU held a commanding lead in set two but Northern Colorado completed their comeback to level the match. A Sydney Dunning kill staked the Shockers to a 23-19 edge before the Bears scored the final six points of the set thanks in large part to four straight WSU attack errors.

A wire-to-wire third set victory put Wichita State in position to put the match away, but the resilient Bears fought back, separating late in the fourth set to send the match to five.

Dunning and Wilson paced the Shockers with 14 kills apiece, while Engel added 13 and Leggett 10. Wilson spearheaded the Wichita State defense with nine block assists and libero Gabi Maas racked up 13 digs. Jordan Heatherly dished out 47 assists.

Northern Colorado was led by 14 kills from Alayna Tessena.

The Shockers are back in action on Thursday, September 11 at the Golden Eagle Invitational in Cookeville, Tennessee. Wichita State takes on Radford in the opening match at 11:00 am CT.
