COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Wichita State (6-2) finished the Golden Eagle Invitational undefeated with a sweep of Samford (2-4). The Shockers won by scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-12.
Sydney Dunning led the Shockers with 12 kills and 12 digs, while
Jordan Heatherly had eight kills, 32 assists, seven digs and a block.
Brooklyn Leggett finished with seven kills and a career-high five service aces, while
Katie Galligan had a match-high 17 digs.
The Shockers hit .343 in the match and finished with seven service aces.
Leggett's serving run gave the Shockers an early 14-4 lead in the first set and Dunning collected five kills in the set to give WSU the 25-15 win.
WSU raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and used two-straight aces from Leggett to push the lead to 12-5. The Bulldogs pulled within 18-15, but the Shockers held on to take the set 25-20.
Two kills from
Elinor Engel put the Shockers up 9-4 in the third set and kills from Dunning and Heatherly pushed the lead to 15-5. WSU closed out the set with a 25-12 win and hit .444 in the set.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., Sept. 16 when they host No. 17 Kansas at 6 p.m. at Charles Koch Arena. Tickets for the match are available at GoShockers.com/Tickets.
