WICHITA, Kan – A three-spot in the third gave UTSA a lead they never relinquished in a 9-2 win over Wichita State on Friday evening at Eck Stadium.
In the first, UTSA threatened early as two walks and a hit by pitch from WSU starter
Grant Adler loaded the bases with only one out, but Adler held firm, recording a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.
In the top of the third, the Roadrunners put together a two-out rally behind three walks and a three RBI double to take a 3-0 lead over the Shockers.
The Shockers responded in the bottom of the fifth as
Camden Johnson rifled a ball into centerfield for a double to bring in
Kam Durnin and cut the Shocker deficit to 3-1.
UTSA got the run right in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly, making it a 4-1 game.
Wichita State found another run in the bottom half as
Jordan Rogers scampered home on a wild pitch, making the score 4-2.
Another sacrifice fly for the Roadrunners re-extended their lead to three runs at 5-2 in the top of the seventh.
The 'Runners added to their advantage in the ninth, plating four runs on four hits to take a 9-2 lead.
The 9-2 score held and UTSA claimed game one of the series against WSU.
Adler suffered the loss for Wichita State, tossing 6.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits. The starter hurled 122 pitches for the Shockers.
Johnson led the Shockers in the hit department with two, highlighted by his double in the fifth.
Next up, the Shockers continue the series with UTSA on Saturday at Eck Stadium at 2:00 PM.
