WICHITA, Kan. -- Mauricio Millan lined a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Wichita State completed a three-game sweep over Missouri State with a wild 9-8 win on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
It was a game of momentum swings, as the Shockers (6-9) took a 4-0 lead after one inning, allowed seven unanswered runs, rallied to take the lead again, and allowed a game-tying homer in the ninth before finally walking it off in the home half of the inning.
Wichita State pounced early against Missouri State starter Tyler Charlton, hanging four runs on the board in the bottom of the first.
Josh Livingston roped an RBI double to open the scoring, followed by consecutive sacrifice flies from
Kam Durnin and
Jordan Rogers to build a 3-0 lead. With two outs and the bases empty, sophomore
Gannon Snyder smashed his first career home run to left field, capping off the early scoring barrage.
WSU starter
Jeremiah Arnett hung zeroes on the board in the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third, as Missouri State (5-9) poured in five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Taeg Gollert delivered a two-run triple in the inning and Carter Bergman sliced a two-run homer to left, putting the Bears in front. Missouri State added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a pair of sacrifice flies, pushing their edge to 7-4.
The Shockers used a two-out rally to pull even in the bottom of the fifth. Rogers smacked an RBI triple off the wall in left that made it 7-5, followed by a pinch-hit RBI single from
Jaden Gustafson that cut the deficit to 7-6.
Cole Dillon knotted the game up with a run-scoring double of his own, one of three hits on the day for the Shocker catcher.
Millan inched WSU in front in the sixth with a booming double to left, scoring
Camden Johnson from first for an 8-7 advantage.
The lead stayed there until the ninth thanks to good work from the Shocker bullpen, including a clutch scoreless inning from
Owen Reynolds in which he stranded two Bears and two more shutout innings from
Karsen Richard. But with one out in the ninth, Missouri State's Max Knight skied a solo home run just over the wall in center to level the ledger at 8-8. Reliever
Aaron Arnold (2-0) preserved the tie with help from the defense, as the Shockers cut down the go-ahead run at the plate on an infield grounder and Arnold punched out Caden Bogenpohl to send the game to the bottom of the ninth.
The Shockers got their fair share of help from Missouri State in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs,
Lane Haworth's pop up to third base was dropped, allowing him to race to second as the winning run. Pinch-hitter
Owen Washburn worked a walk, then
Camden Johnson loaded the bases on an error by second baseman Nick Rodriguez, who made a high throw to first on Johnson's ground ball. Millan pulled a 2-1 pitch from Garrett Ferguson (0-2) into left field, setting off the celebration.
Wichita State looks to carry their momentum on the road as they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for a two-game midweek series against Nebraska. First pitch of Tuesday's opener is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT.
