LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska scored nine runs over their final four innings to cruise past Wichita State 10-1 on Tuesday night at Haymarket Park.
The Shockers (6-10) trailed just 1-0 into the bottom of the fifth, but the Huskers (6-8) scored three times in the fifth, once in the seventh and five times in the eighth to blow the game open. Wichita State was held to just four hits by a combination of five Nebraska pitchers and struck out 14 times.
WSU starter
Jace Miner (1-2) kept the Shockers within striking distance, allowing just one run through the first four innings. But a pair of WSU errors helped the Huskers strike for three runs in the fifth, capped by a two-run single from Devin Nunez that extended the Nebraska lead to 4-0. Miner ultimately allowed just one earned run over 4.1 innings, striking out three and walking two.
Nebraska starter Carson Jasa (1-1) held the Shockers scoreless over five innings, striking out eight in the process. WSU finally got on the board in the sixth against the Huskers bullpen via a solo home run from
Lane Haworth, cutting the deficit to 4-1. But Nebraska answered back with a Nunez RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning and then scored five runs on just a single hit in the bottom of the eighth, capitalizing on two walks and three hit by pitches. Nunez plated the final two runs of the night with a two-run single, giving him five RBI on the night.
In addition to Haworth's homer, the Shockers got hits from
Jordan Rogers,
Camden Johnson and
Zeb Henry, who recorded his first WSU hit with a third inning single.
The Shockers and Huskers conclude the midweek series on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT.
