TULSA, Okla. – Three individual wins over ranked Tulsa opponents powered the No. 75/67 Wichita State women's tennis team to a 4-1 victory over the No. 58/53 Golden Hurricane on Tuesday evening at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Shockers (6-5) have now won back-to-back matches and five of their last six. Tulsa (10-4) saw their two-match win streak break at the hands of WSU.
The win for the Shockers was their first against Tulsa in Tulsa since April 5, 2017. WSU had lost the last three to the Golden Hurricane on the road.
In doubles, the Shockers faced a tall task as Tulsa touts a ranked doubles pairings at each of the top two doubles courts. The Shockers started slow overall, falling behind 3-1 at court two and 4-0 at court three, but the Shockers sparked a rally, led by
Kristina Kudryavtseva and
Theodora Chantava, who won five straight games to win 6-3 over Tulsa's 58
thranked doubles pair.
At court one, the
Giorgia Roselli and
Xin Tong Wang pulled off a second upset, using a 4-1 lead to power their way to a 6-3 win over the No. 28 ranked doubles pairing in the country, clinching the doubles point for Wichita State.
In singles, the Shockers carried their momentum from an elite doubles win to the singles courts as they grabbed first set wins on four of six singles courts.
Chantava struck first, winning 6-3, 6-4 at court four to take a 2-0 lead. Kudryavtseva fell 6-3, 6-4 at court three, giving Tulsa what would be their only point of the match.
Next, Wang earned her second ranked win of the day, defeating Tulsa's No. 76 Maria Berlanga Bandera, 6-2, 6-3 to put WSU up 3-1 and on the brink of victory.
Anne Knuettel swept away the Golden Hurricane with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at court six, ending the match with a 4-1 result for Wichita State.
The next match for the Shockers is at home against the Memphis Tigers on March 6.
