SAN ANTONIO – Wichita State scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to secure a 12-2 win in six innings over the UTSA Roadrunners in game one of the weekend series.
Â
The Shockers (14-14, 3-4) have won three conference games in a row after a 1-4 start and take a 1-0 lead over UTSA (13-15, 1-6) in the regular season series.
Â
The Shocker bats came out hot, as an error and a base hit quickly turned into two runs as
Taylor Sedlacek hit a double off the wall in right to score
Lauren Lucas, and
Camryn Compton hit a sacrifice fly to bring in
Brookelyn Livanec to give WSU an early 2-0 lead.
Â
Neither side scored until the top of the fourth when
Gabby Scott squeaked a ball through the left side of the infield, allowing Compton to score.
Krystin Nelson added a second run in the inning with a bases-loaded fielder's choice to put the Shockers up 4-0.
Â
In the fifth,
Jodie Epperson added another run to the Shocker lead by legging out a two-out infield single, allowing a run to score from third.
Â
In the bottom half, the Roadrunners broke through against starter
Ryley Nihart, putting together a two-out rally to score two runs and bounce Nihart out of the circle. With
Alex Aguilar now pitching and the bases loaded, the Shocker reliever induced a quick ground out to first, maintaining a 5-2 lead for WSU.
Â
In the next frame, the Shockers responded to the UTSA rally with three quick hits, with the third being a two-run double from Lucas to put Wichita State up 7-2. That was just the beginning for the Shockers in the inning as after Sedlacek walked, Compton hit a monster three-run homer down the line in left to put the Shockers up 10-2.
Â
The Black and Yellow bats weren't done, as Epperson walked and then
Sami Hood lifted a home run over the fence in left center, making it a 12-2 game.Â
Â
The score held as Aguilar kept the Roadrunners off the board, ending the game with a 12-2 Shocker win in six innings.
Â
Nihart (2-3) earned the win in her 4.2 innings in the circle. Aguilar earned her first save of the season with her 1.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
Â
Nine Shockers recorded a hit in the game and 10Â reached base. Hood was 3-for-4 on the day to lead Wichita State, while Compton was 2-for-2 with four RBI.
