SAN DIEGO – The No. 75 Wichita State men's tennis team earned a commanding 5-2 road win over the San Diego State Aztecs on Friday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center.
With the win, the Shockers (8-8) extended their winning streak to three matches.
In doubles, the Shockers dominated, taking fierce control on three courts resulting in a doubles victory.
Luke Bracks and
Vanja Hodzic won 6-2 at court three and soon after
Ilias Worthington and
Kristof Minarik secured doubles for the visiting Shockers with another 6-2 win.
In singles, the Shockers stayed hot, taking the first set from five of six Aztecs.
Worthington struck first with a smashing 6-2, 6-3 win at court four, putting WSU up 2-0
Later, Hodzic snuck out a 6-4, 6-4 win, giving the Shockers a 3-0 lead.
Alejandro Jacome clinched the Shockers' third consecutive match win with a 6-2, 6-3 win at court two.
Playing the match out,
Amir Milushev nearly pulled off an amazing comeback win, fighting off five match points in a super tiebreaker third set, but came up just short, falling 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (8), making the match score 5-1.
In spite of an epic tiebreak win in his first set,
Arenui Luethi ultimately fell at court six in a super tiebreak, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 1-0 (7), ending the match with a 5-2 score in favor of Wichita State.
Next up, the Shockers travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to face UNLV on March 24.
