WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State (17-9, 9-5) fell to Charlotte (16-10, 7-7) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena to end a three-match win streak. Charlotte won by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 22-25 and 26-24.
The Shockers recorded a .125 hitting percentage with 52 kills and 30 errors. The 49ers hit .192, with 60 kills and 26 errors.
Jordan Heatherly and
Hannah Hawkins both recorded double-doubles for Wichita State. Heatherly finished with 32 assists and 14 digs, and Hawkins recorded 12 assists and 11 digs.
Brooklyn Leggett led the Shockers with 13 kills.
Gabi Maas finished with 19 digs, which led the team.
Wichita State got off to a slow start down 3-0 to start the first set. WSU took its first lead of the set after a 3-0 run to make the score 8-7. The Shockers held a 12-8 lead after a 4-0 run.
Charlotte went on a 5-1 run to take an 18-16 lead over Wichita State. Maas dove into the crowd to keep the ball alive, which would lead to the Shockers tying the set at 21-21. Charlotte went on a 4-0 run to narrowly beat Wichita State 25-21.
In the second set, Charlotte jumped in front to a 5-1 lead after a 5-0 run. After a 3-0 run, Charlotte led the Shockers 12-8. Charlotte defeated WSU 25-20 in the second set.
The beginning of the third set went back and forth until the Shockers went on a 3-0 run to take an 8-5 lead over Charlotte.
McKenzie Jones recorded a powerful kill to extend the WSU lead to 17-14. Wichita State beat Charlotte 25-22 in a tightly contested third set.
WSU took its first lead of the fourth set at 7-6 after a 4-0 run. Charlotte went on a 9-1 run to take a 17-10 lead over Wichita State. The Shockers cut the deficit to 19-17 after a 6-1 run. Charlotte held off the WSU comeback to win the fourth and final set 26-24.
The Shockers are back in action against Rice at 6 p.m. on Friday at Charles Koch Arena. It is Senior Night as seniors
