Winslow, Adkins Spark Rally, Shockers Take Second in Edwardsville

9/10/2024 3:41:00 PM

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Senior Michael Winslow and sophomore Ty Adkins led the Wichita State men's golf team to a solid second-place showing on Tuesday afternoon at the SIUE Dolenc Invitational.

Host Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville pulled away late in round three to take home the crown at 15 strokes under par with round scores of 277, 276, and 284, just four ahead of Wichita State. Bradley's Connor Hamm won the individual crown at 13-strokes under par, besting SIUE's Brady Kaufmann by three.

In the Shocker season debut, the Black and Yellow had early trouble across the lineup at Gateway National Golf Links, slipping as low as 11th place midway through the opening round. The Shockers would hit their stride on the back nine however, led by Winslow who finished three-under for the round to lift the Shockers into the top ten at the conclusion of the round.

Winslow continued his strong performance into the second round, shooting five-under the second time around at Gateway National. He finished eight strokes under par for the day and moved into a tie for third place.

Sophomore Ty Adkins had a strong opening day, finishing four strokes under par, and sitting in 14th place through the first two rounds.

At the end of day one, the Shockers managed to climb up the standings after their slow start, moving from 11th place, all the way to first, briefly, before settling into second place when the round ended, one stroke behind the leaders and host, SIU-Edwardsville.

Round three began with the top three teams in the standings being within one stroke of each other. SIUE sat in first at 12-under with Wichita State and Bradley tied for second at 11-under.

Despite an encouraging early start, the Shockers stumbled down the stretch in round three, falling as far back as fifth place in the standings, but they rallied back once again to threaten for the lead, but would fall just short to the Cougars, taking second place in their season opener.

Winslow was the top Shocker in tournament, finishing tied for sixth at five strokes under par. Adkins recorded an eagle on hole 18 to jump into an 11th place finish at four-under par.
