WICHITA, Kan. -- Three Wichita State pitchers combined on a two-hitter and
Kam Durnin launched a late, go-ahead homer as the Shockers hung on for a 2-1 win over Charlotte on Friday night at Eck Stadium.
It was a pitcher's duel from the outset as Wichita State's
Tommy LaPour and Charlotte's Cole Reynolds traded zeroes through five innings. The 49ers (22-28, 11-11) took the lead in the top of the sixth when AJ Bianchina yanked a solo home run, but the Shockers answered back with a long ball of their own in the home half of the inning.
Dayvin Johnson worked a one-out walk and Durnin followed with a two-run blast to left field, his fourth home run in the last nine games.
Leading 2-1, the Shockers turned the ball over to left-hander
Hunter Holmes, who delivered one of his best performances of the season. Holmes retired the first eight batters he faced, three via strikeout, before allowing a two-out single in the ninth to Carson Bayne that marked the end of his evening. WSU called upon
Nate Adler, who issued a walk to put runners at first and second before getting Dante DeFranco on a fly ball to center for the final out. It's the sixth save of the season for Adler and his first since March 28.
LaPour (4-3) earned the win by allowing just one hit and one run over 6.0 innings of work, striking out three while walking five. Reynolds (4-6) took the tough-luck loss for Charlotte, tagged for six hits and two runs over 5.2 innings.
Gannon Snyder was the only Shocker to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Wichita State finished the night with seven hits, six of which were singles.
The Shockers (25-26, 11-11) moved into a three-way tie for third place with the victory.
Wichita State and Charlotte will continue the series with game two on Saturday afternoon. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
