WICHITA, Kan. -- Caden Favors fired 7.2 strong innings and
Seth Stroh hit a pair of three-run homers as Wichita State rolled past Charlotte 11-2 on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers (26-26, 12-11) secured their fourth consecutive win and second consecutive conference series win, moving them into sole possession of third place in the American Athletic Conference standings pending the result of East Carolina and Tulane on Saturday night.
Favors (8-4) was brilliant in his final Eck Stadium appearance, allowing seven hits and two runs over 7.2 innings while striking out eight and issuing no walks. He was tagged for a run in the first and another in the third when Carson Bayne's fly ball to center field got lost in the sun for a triple, but recovered to hold the 49ers (22-29, 11-12) off the board in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. He struck out the first two men he faced in the eighth before exiting to a standing ovation.
Wichita State gave Favors all the run support he would need with two big innings. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, WSU hung four runs on the board when
Camden Johnson slapped an RBI single and
Seth Stroh followed with a bomb off the batter's eye for a three-run home run and a 4-1 lead.
Dayvin Johnson added a Senior Day home run of his own leading off the third and
Mauricio Millan made it 6-2 with a run-scoring ground out in the fifth. The Shockers put the game away with a five-run eighth, highlighted by another three-run blast from Stroh that tucked just inside the right field foul pole. It marked the first multi-homer game for Stroh, who has launched a career-best eight long balls this season.
Jordan Rogers tacked on an RBI single and
Derek Williams delivered a sacrifice fly later in the inning for the final margin.
Jack Mount recorded the final four outs in relief to nail down the win for Wichita State.
Charlotte starter Adam Stanton (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven hits and five runs over 3.0 innings.Â
The Shockers and 49ers will conclude the series on Sunday. First pitch of the series finale has been moved up to 11:00 am due to the threat of inclement weather.
