No. 63 Shockers Fall to Tulsa, Dominate UMKC to Split Doubleheader

WICHITA, Kan. – The 63rd ranked Wichita State women's tennis team split their doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The Shockers fell to Tulsa 4-1 and bounced back to sweep UMKC, 4-0 later in the day.

The loss to Tulsa for the Shockers (11-8) was their fourth in a row, and Tulsa (9-11) snapped their four-match losing streak, but the win over Kansas City (5-13) would get the Shockers back in the win column.

"The Tulsa match was another really good college tennis match," Head Coach Colin Foster said. "We knew it would be a tough match and it was."

Against Tulsa, doubles was close, but it was the Golden Hurricane emerging victorious with wins over the Shocker pairs at courts one and two to gain the doubles point.

In singles, the tight battle continued as four of six courts moved into third sets before the match ended.

Xin Tong Wang struck first with a 6-4, 6-2 win at court two, earning her tenth singles win of the year.

Natsumi Kurahashi would be the first Shocker to fall in singles, losing a very tight match, 6-4, 7-5, at court two to give Tulsa the lead back.

Giorgia Roselli would go down next, losing 0-6, 7-5, 6-2, bringing the Golden Hurricane to the brink of victory.

The Hurricane would roll to victory shortly after with a three-set win over Kristina Kudryavtseva at court four, winning 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-2.

"Against Tulsa, we had some opportunities to get some more points on the board and maybe pull out the win, but we just play well enough in the crucial moments," said Foster "Tulsa was able to battle really well under pressure."

In the Shockers second match against the UMKC Roos, the Shockers left no doubt, sweeping the UMKC 4-0 in under two hours of match time.

In doubles, the Shockers won with ease with Wang and Kurahashi opening doubles with a 6-0 win at court two. Kudryavtseva and Jessica Anzo would finish off the point for the Shockers with a 6-3 win at court one to give the Shockers the opening point.

In singles, Anzo found victory again, starting off singles with a dominant 6-1,6-1 win at court five.

Anne Knuettel would add to the Shocker lead with a 6-2, 6-1 at court four, making it 3-0 Shockers.

Wang finished the day with another singles win at court one, this one 6-4, 6-3 to complete the sweep for the Shockers.

"It was great to bounce back with a good and complete performance against UMKC," said Foster. "We're still getting stronger, more confident, and the most important thing for us now is just staying resilient."

The Shockers will head back on the road for a contest with the 56th ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Friday at Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence.
