WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's tennis team earned a clean sweep of the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Friday afternoon at Wichita Country Club.
Â
The Shockers (7-4) earn their fourth victory in their last five matches while Abilene Christian (2-7) has now lost three in a row.
Â
Head coach
Colin Foster was very happy with his team's performance.
Â
"We played well across the board," said Foster. "It was a great effort to get a 7-0 win and start an important week for us with a complete team win."
Â
The Shockers took the lead early with decisive victory on the doubles courts, dominating at courts one and two to take the early advantage.
Â
Jessica Anzo and
Kristina Kudryavtseva cruised to victory at court one, winning 6-0 to give the Shockers the early edge.Â
Â
Natsumi Kurahashi and
Xin Tong Wang clinched the point for the Shockers with a dominant win at court two, 6-2.
Â
In singles,
Theodora Chantava found swift victory at court four, 6-2, 6-1, grabbing her seventh singles win of the season.
Â
Shortly after, Wang notched her second win on the day with a win at court two, 6-1, 6-2, and making it 3-0 Shockers.
Â
Later on, Kurahashi would fight off a fierce comeback attempt at court one, winning a three-set dual to clinch the match for Wichita State, winning 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
Â
Near simultaneously, Kudryavtseva would prevail at court three, roaring back after losing the first set to win 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1, and make it 5-0 Shockers.
Â
Coach Foster thought the wins for Kurahashi and Kudryavtseva were very important today.
Â
"Kristina and Natsumi could've seen that the team was in good shape elsewhere and let those matches slip away, but they both really dug deep and earned tough wins," said Foster.
Â
Anzo added to the Shocker lead with another win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 at court five.
Â
Roselli completed the sweep of the Wildcats with a smashing win, 6-4, 6-2 win at court six to end the match.
Â
"We've had a good training block to prepare for the second half of our season," said Foster. "Now it's time to continue getting after it in practice and in competition the rest of the year."
Â
Next up, the Shockers will take a trip next week to Indian Wells, California, where they will compete against the North Texas Mean Green on Tuesday and the #68 Liberty Flames on Wednesday.
