INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The Wichita State women's tennis team roared back to knock off the North Texas Mean Green on Tuesday afternoon 4-2 at The Vintage Club in Indian Wells, California.
Â
The Shockers (8-4) have won three straight matches while North Texas (8-8) has lost back-to-back matches in the last two days.
Â
Head coach
Colin Foster was glad to get the win and was proud of his team's fight in this close match.
Â
"It was a nearly four-hour battle. A fantastic match," said Foster. "It was two very evenly matched teams, but we just fought and found a way to win."
Â
North Texas became just the second team since February 2 to take the doubles point from the Shockers, doing so with wins at courts one and three. The Shocker duo of
Natsumi Kurahashi and
Xin Tong Wang improved to 8-2 in doubles this year with a win at court two.
Â
In singles, North Texas would strike again, rolling over
Kristina Kudryavtseva at court three, 6-4, 6-0 to take a 2-0 lead.
Â
Wang would fight back and deliver the first blow for the Shockers with a 7-5, 6-4 win at court two, her seventh win in a row.Â
Â
Kurahashi would fight off a loss in set one, battling back to win a pair of close sets to take her match 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and tie the match score at 2-2.Â
Â
Jessica Anzo would follow a similar path. After losing the first set, 6-2, the Shocker graduate student come back to win a close set two, 7-5, before crushing her opponent in the third set, winning 6-1 and giving the Shockers a 3-2 lead.
Â
"I think the team welcomed the challenge of being in another competitive match," said Foster. "We had a few matches earlier in the season like this that didn't go our way and those experiences made us stronger and powered us to the win today."
Â
At court four,
Theodora Chantava would seal the deal for Wichita State with another three-set victory. The sophomore won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second in a close tiebreak, losing 7-6 (5) to set up a huge third set. It was all Chantava in set three, as she blew by her opponent 6-1 to finish off an important victory for the Shockers. The win was her fifth in a row and she is now 8-1 in dual matches this season.
Â
"I'm really proud of our effort and performance today," said Foster. "It's going to be an exciting challenge to recover quickly and get ready for tomorrow's test."
Â
The Shockers play #66 Liberty tomorrow at 3:00 PM Central in Palm Springs, California.
