LINCOLN, Neb. – Wichita State bounced back in a big way after falling to No. 14 Missouri in 5 innings, 13-3, in the first game of the day to run-rule Nebraska, 17-4, in 6 innings Saturday.
Wichita State's 17 runs are the most by an opponent in Bowlin Stadium history. It opened in 2002. It marked the Shockers' first victory by run-rule this season.
Game 1 | Wichita State 3, #14 Missouri 13 (5 innings)
Missouri scored two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. The Tigers had their way with the Shocker pitchers, combining for 12 hits and 13 runs. Wichita State's defense didn't help matters, tallying a season-high four errors. Six of Missouri's 13 runs were unearned.
Alison Cooper made it only 1.2 innings in the start. She allowed seven runs, only two earned, on five hits, a walk and three hit batters.
After going hitless last night vs. Nebraska,
CC Wong bounced back with a pair of singles in three at bats.
The bright spot for Wichita State was freshman
Sophie Johnson. Johnson made her first career start at DP and recorded her first career hit, a two-run home run.
Missouri put up five runs in the second, four in the third and two more in the fourth.
A
Taylor Sedlacek solo home run in the top of the fifth closed the scoring to make it 13-3.
Game 2 | Wichita State 17, Nebraska 4 (6 innings)
Wichita State had four players with multiple hits, setting season highs in runs and hits (16).
Sami Hood had a career day, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI, all career highs.
Krystin Nelson tied a career high with three hits. She was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
Addison Barnard scored three times to go with a home run and four RBI.
CC Wong was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs.
Taylor Sedlacek and
Bailey Urban both doubled and had two RBI to their names.
Lainee Brown,
Caroline Tallent and
Sophie Johnson all added hits as well.
Alex Aguilar (3-1) had the comfort of a big lead for much of the game, earning the win in 5.0 innings. She allowed four runs on seven hits, two walks and struck out three.
Chloe Barber finished the game in the sixth, retiring all three Huskers she faced.
Wichita State was able to put the Missouri game behind the early thanks to a three-run top of the first. A leadoff single from Wong, followed by three straight walks, a Hood RBI single and an RBI groundout gave Wichita State an early 3-0 lead.
The Huskers would get a run back in the bottom half of the first on a pair of doubles.
Wichita State opened the floodgates in the second. Three-run home runs off the bat of Barnard and Hood upped the lead to 9-1. A Nelson RBI single then made it 10-1.
Nebraska would scratch across a single run in the second, third innings and fourth innings, cutting it to 10-4.
After Wichita State's offense was silenced for three innings, the bats woke up again in the sixth. The Shockers put the game away behind a seven-run frame on a Wong RBI single, Barnard RBI fielder's choice, two-run double from Sedlacek, an Urban RBI double and Hood's second home run of the game – a two-run shot.
