WICHITA, Kan. -- Kansas State erased an early 4-0 deficit with a six-run top of the sixth inning and held on for an 8-6 win over Wichita State on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers (13-7) jumped in front with two runs in the first on a
Jordan Rogers RBI double and a wild pitch, then added two more in the third when
Derek Williams doubled home a pair of runs to make it 4-0.
Wichita State starter
Tyler Dobbs weaved in and out of trouble through five innings, allowing just one run in the fourth on a Nick English two-out RBI single. In the sixth, however, the Wildcats (14-6) chased him from the game with three hits, the last of which was an English RBI double that cut the WSU lead to 4-2. An infield single, fielder's choice and bases-loaded walk against reliever
Caleb Anderson (1-1) put Kansas State in front, 5-4. Then with two outs,
Chuck Ingram's fly ball to center field was lost in the lights, landing for a two-run double that made it 7-4 in favor of Kansas State.
The Shockers answered back with a two-run triple from
Seth Stroh, slicing the margin to 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth. But they could get no closer against Kansas State reliever Jackson Wentworth, who earned his fourth save with three scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
The Wildcats managed an insurance run in the top of the ninth on another English RBI single for the final margin.
Mason Buss (2-0) picked up the win for Kansas State with a scoreless bottom of the fifth. Anderson was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs.
Dayvin Johnson led the Shockers with three hits, while Rogers finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace Wichita State offensively.
Wichita State is back in action on Friday as they open American Athletic Conference play on the road at UAB. First pitch from Birmingham is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
