BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Wichita State went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and UAB used two big innings to knock off the Shockers 5-3 on Friday night at Young Memorial Field.
The Shockers (13-8) struck first on an RBI double from
Camden Johnson in the top of the third, but UAB (11-10) answered right back with a three-run frame in the bottom of the inning. Logan Braunschweig had the big hit in the inning, slicing a two-run double that gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead. Brayton Brown capped off the scoring with an RBI ground out that made it 3-1.
UAB managed a pair of two-out runs in the fourth to stretch the lead to 5-1. Nick Hollifield skied a two-run blast off WSU starter
Caden Favors (4-1), who took the loss by allowing five runs over his six innings of work.
Wichita State chipped away with a pair of solo home runs against UAB starter Blayze Berry (2-0).
Derek Williams tucked an opposite-field shot just inside the right field foul pole in the sixth and
Kam Durnin launched his first collegiate homer in the seventh to pull the Shockers to within 5-3.
Berry was outstanding to earn the victory for the Blazers, fanning 12 over his 7.0 innings of work. He did not issue a walk and allowed six hits.
The Shockers had two chances late to tie the game or potentially take the lead.
Jordan Rogers led off the eighth with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and third on a ground out, but was left stranded when Williams flied to right. In the ninth, pinch-hitter
Gannon Snyder and
Mauricio Millan each worked a walk, but
Seth Stroh struck out and Durnin rolled into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Brock Hill earned his second save of the season for UAB by inducing the twin-killing.
Jack Mount impressed for Wichita State with four strikeouts over two perfect innings in relief.
The Shockers and Blazers continue the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
