Destiny Masters - AAC MVP

Masters, Navajon Claim AAC Event Titles, Masters Named MVP

2/24/2024 11:24:00 PM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The day after claiming silver in the pentathlon, Destiny Masters jumped the 11th-best mark in the NCAA to win gold in the high jump, and Adria Navajon won his third-consecutive heptathlon title at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Masters, a junior from El Dorado, Kan., scored a meet-high 21 points to claim the AAC Most Valuable Performer award, earning 10 points in the high jump (1st), eight in the pentathlon (2nd), two in the long jump (7th) and one in the 60-meter hurdles (8th).

Both the Shocker men and women placed fifth overall as a team with South Florida winning its first-ever team title on the men's side and Charlotte winning the women's team competition in its first year in the conference.

Masters gave the Shockers the high jump sweep as Brady Palen won the men's title on Friday. She cleared a personal-best 1.86m/6'1.25" to take the No. 11 spot in the NCAA outright after clinching the win at 1.82m/5'11.5". Mattelyn Swartz scored a half point for the Shockers in the high jump, tying for eighth with a clearance of 1.64m/5'4.5".

On day two of the heptathlon, Navajon entered the day 91 points behind Rice's Vincent Arousell but regained his lead from early on day one with the fastest heptathlon hurdles time of the day, running 8.22. He then cleared 4.55m/14'11" in the pole vault, the second-highest clearance behind East Carolina's Starrett Vesper to maintain the lead going into the final event. He finished the day with the second-best 1,000-meter time of 2:48.34 behind teammate Luke Porter who ran 2:46.15. Navajon completed the heptathlon three-peat with a season-best 5,568 poitns after winning in 2022 and 2023. Hudson Bailey earned his first podium finish of his career, scoring 5,048 points after placing fourth a year ago.

Luke Czarnecki and Luke Porter also scored points for the team in the heptathlon, placing fifth and seventh, respectively.

In the 800 meters, Farrah Miller broke the Wichita State program record to finish second, earning all-conference recognition with a time of 2:04.68. For the men, Jacob Meyers scored four points with a fifth-place finish, running a personal-best 1:52.12.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Joakim Genereux, Jason Parrish, Bryan Haney and Trace Spires raced to a podium finish, placing third from the first heat with the seventh-fastest time in Shocker history (3:14.08), the Shockers' third-consecutive podium finish in the event. The women's relay placed eighth with a time of 3:48.09 to score one point.

In the hurdles, conference leader Jaleel Montgomery took a tumble in the final and got disqualified for grabbing a hurdle after his fall, but Josh Parrish and Adria Navajon scored a total of six points for the team finishing fifth (8.05) and seventh (8.22), respectively. For the women, Kate Campos joined Masters in the final and finished seventh with a time of 8.51 to score two points.

After a devastating day one DQ in the 5,000 meters, Lucy Ndungu came back in the 3,000 meters and ran a personal-best 9:36.08, the ninth-fastest time in program history, to finish fifth and score nine points for the team.

This wraps up the indoor season for most of the Shockers, but Destiny Masters is sitting in position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon and high jump.

The NCAA Indoor Championship selections will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 27 by 9 p.m., and the championship meet will begin Friday, March 8 in Boston, Mass.
