NEWTON, Kan. – Two late birdies by
Jose Miguel Ramirez and a late double bogey by one of the top players in the tournament field gave the Shockers the team trophy at the third annual Grier Jones Shocker Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
The Shocker victory came behind round scores of 293, 286, and 285, finishing even-par for the tournament, besting second place Incarnate Word by four strokes to take the team crown. Xavier's Kellen Dean won the individual title with a score of 209, edging out Oklahoma State's Johnnie Clark by one stroke for the individual crown.
For the third year in a row in their home tournament, the Shockers put together a sensational rally late in the third round to take the team crown. The rally came behind excellent scores from Ramirez and
Mitchell Revie, who both finished even par for the tournament.
On the decisive day, the Shockers remained in a tight battle for first place, battling against SIUE, Incarnate Word, Xavier, and Denver for the team trophy. As the leaders reached the back nine, the Cougars, Shockers, and Cardinals emerged as the front runners. The Shockers would take their first true lead of the day after birdies from Revie,
Jose Carletta and
Ty Adkins on hole 16 put the Shockers up by two. Incarnate Word's Joe Buenfeld would rebound with an eagle on 16 to move the Cardinals back into a tie for first.
With only Ramirez and
Michael Winslow left to play for the Shockers, Ramirez would come up clutch, birdying his final two holes to put the Shockers in control. Incarnate Word would get a chance to pull off a miracle, but the Cardinals top player for the tournament sent a ball into the hazard area on hole 18, forcing him to take a dropshot which ultimately resulted in a double bogey, sealing the win for the Shockers.
