Tennis Trio Named Academic All-District

5/9/2023 12:49:00 PM

For their combined efforts in the classroom and on the court, Wichita State's Harriet Hamilton, LingWei Kong and Natsumi Kurahashi have been named to the first ever College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Women's Tennis Team.

CSC, formerly known as CoSIDA, has sponsored Academic All-America teams since 1952, however this is the first year that the organization has published a tennis-specific list. To be recognized, student-athletes must have a 3.50+ cumulative GPA and at least one full calendar year at their current school. Graduate students must have also maintained at least a 3.5 as an undergrad.

All three Shocker honorees were active in the community during the 2022-23 school year with 15+ hours each of volunteer service. Their efforts included setup for the annual Illuminations at Botanica and bi-weekly mentoring sessions with students at Cloud Elementary School.

Hamilton, a second-year graduate student from Turin, Italy, carries a 3.94 GPA while working toward a masters in supply chain management with a minor in data analytics. She led the team in singles victories in each of her two seasons as a Shocker, posting a combined 39-20 mark (25-10 in duals). Prior to WSU, Hamilton was a two-time all-conference performer at Jacksonville State where she completed her bachelor's degree in business management and human resources.

Kong played No. 1 singles this spring while finishing up her masters in sport management. The GuangZhou, China entered the semester with a perfect 4.0 GPA. In four years as a Shocker she amassed nearly 100 combined singles and doubles victories.

An exercise science major from Toyota, Japan, Kurahashi carries a 3.62 GPA. The redshirt junior spent the majority of the spring at No. 2 singles and partnered with Kong in doubles. During the fall season, the pair reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Central Region Championships (WSU's deepest run since 2014).

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 1.
