BELLEAIR, Fla. -- The Wichita State men's golf team finished eighth at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship this weekend at Pelican Golf Club.
Houston (272-278-281--831, -9) cruised to the team title, besting second place Cincinnati by 12 strokes. The Cougars Santiago De La Fuente claimed individual medalist honors with a 10-under 200, three shots ahead of teammate Austyn Reilly.
The Shockers (292-285-294--871, +31) were led by
Blake Lorenz, who tied for 22nd with a 6-over 216. Lorenz shot even-par on the first two days, but slipped out of the top ten with a final round 76. He racked up 10 birdies for the tournament, ending his season with a team-best 98.
Senior
Dawson Lewis (73-74-72--219, +9) turned in his best round of the weekend on Sunday in his final competition as a Shocker, carding a birdie on each of the last two holes to tie for 33rd. He led the Shockers with 12 total birdies and also added an eagle on Friday at the par-five 14th.
Lucas Scheufler (76-71-74--221, +11) finished right behind Lewis in a tie for 35th, posting a team-high 33 pars over 54 holes in Belleair.
JT Pittman (73-76-80--229, +19) ended the weekend in 40th, joining Lewis with an eagle on 14 in his final round.
Michael Winslow (70-72--142, +2) joined the lineup as a substitute for round two and turned in 36 strong holes, notching five birdies and an eagle along the way. He replaced freshman
Matthew Sandoz, who shot an opening round 80 on Friday.
