WICHITA – In a match that began outdoors and finished indoors, the Shockers weathered the storm on senior day, closing out Creighton, 4-1.
Â
"It's great to finish our last home match of the season with a win," head coach
Darragh Glavin said. "Thanks to our seniors, Zach and Orel, for all of their contributions to this program over the years."
Â
Playing simultaneously with the women's team, the men had four active singles matches while on the outdoor courts with the No. 5 and 6 waiting for matches to finish.
Â
After losing the doubles point, the Shockers (11-14) quickly bounced back, winning all four first sets.
Orel Ovil was the first to finish winning his final home match as a Shocker, 6-0, 6-3, on court three.
Â
"Great to see Orel win his singles match in dominant fashion, get us on the board early in singles and get us the momentum we needed after a close doubles point," Glavin said.
Â
Shortly after moving indoors due to lightning strikes in the area,
Alejandro Jacome and
Kristof Minarik closed out their matches in straight sets on courts one and four, respectively.
Â
Misha Kvantaliani dropped his second set at No. 2 singles and was down 5-2 in the third set but rallied back, winning five consecutive games to clinch the match for the Shockers.
Â
Following the match, the team honored seniors, Ovil and
Zach Grueber.
Â
The Shockers head to Orlando, Fla. Apr. 18 to play Temple before the opening round of the American Athletic Conference tournament.
