4/15/2023 5:47:00 PM

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Blake Lorenz bested par on all three rounds, equaling his career best with a tie for third, as Wichita State finished sixth at the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course.

Lorenz (66-71-71--208, -8) had just three holes worse than par for the entire tournament, ending two strokes back of Iowa's Mac McClear at 10-under for individual medalist honors. Lorenz's 13 birdies were tied for eighth-most in the field, and he also added an opening round eagle on the par-four seventh. That established a trend of dominance on par-fours for the junior, who averaged 3.87 strokes on those holes for the tournament, third-best among all competitors.

Wichita State (287-287-293--867, +3) put together three consistent rounds to secure sixth place against a strong field in Iowa City. Host Iowa claimed the team title at 29-under, besting runner-up Kansas by five strokes.

Lucas Scheufler (72-73-71--216, E) was at his best on the final day, firing three birdies and just two bogeys to climb into a tie for 20th with a one-under final 18. Scheufler notched 11 total birdies, including a personal-best five in the first round.

Competing as an individual, Matthew Sandoz (73-70-76--219, +3) continued his recent run of strong play by finishing in a tie for 31st. The freshman put together Wichita State's second-best round of the tournament from Friday night into Saturday morning, signing for a second round 70 that included a run of four birdies on holes 1-6.

Dawson Lewis (72-71-79--222, +6) saw his solid tournament spoiled on the final day, though he and teammate J.T. Pittman (77-72-77--226, +10) were two of just five players in the entire field who had two eagles for the competition. Lewis tied for 44th, while Pittman tied for 53rd. Aston Castillo (82-78-74--234, +18) shook off a frustrating opening day to improve each round, ending in a tie for 72nd.

The Shockers head to The American Championship next week in Belleair, Florida. The competition tees off from Pelican Golf Club on Friday, April 21.
