CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Wichita State women's tennis team earned another round of sweet revenge after besting Cincinnati, 4-0, Friday afternoon on the Western Athletic Club indoor courts.
Â
Five of the 10 Shocker victories this spring have come against teams that bested them last season. These Bearcats did it twice, including season-ender in the first round of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship.
Â
Friday's match followed a much different script.
Â
"We played a very aggressive doubles point and kept our foot on the gas in singles," head coach
Colin Foster said. "Cincinnati made a push on every court, but we responded well."
Â
WSU (10-8) breezed to the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories on courts 2 and 3.
Â
Harriet Hamilton swept her match at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-2) to make it a 2-0 Shocker lead, but the last two points proved tougher to obtain.
Â
Kristina Kudryavtseva won a back-and-forth affair on court No. 4 (6-1, 3-6, 6-4) and
Jessica Anzo delivered the clincher at No. 3, battling back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Â
Three other matches went unfinished. Lingwei Kong was deadlocked at 5-5 in her third set at No. 1 singles, while
Natsumi Kurahashi was in the midst of a tiebreaker at No. 2, ahead 6-3, 6-6.
Theodora Chantava trailed late in her match at No. 5.
Â
"We're stressing the importance of resolve and relentlessness, and those areas were very good today," Foster said. "Tomorrow will be a quick turnaround, but we're excited for another big test."
Â
The Shockers will stick around Cincinnati for one more day for a matchup with Xavier. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eastern Hills Tennis Club.
