Shockers Earn Sweep Revenge at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Wichita State women's tennis team earned another round of sweet revenge after besting Cincinnati, 4-0, Friday afternoon on the Western Athletic Club indoor courts.

Five of the 10 Shocker victories this spring have come against teams that bested them last season. These Bearcats did it twice, including season-ender in the first round of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship.

Friday's match followed a much different script.

"We played a very aggressive doubles point and kept our foot on the gas in singles," head coach Colin Foster said. "Cincinnati made a push on every court, but we responded well."

WSU (10-8) breezed to the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories on courts 2 and 3.

Harriet Hamilton swept her match at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-2) to make it a 2-0 Shocker lead, but the last two points proved tougher to obtain.

Kristina Kudryavtseva won a back-and-forth affair on court No. 4 (6-1, 3-6, 6-4) and Jessica Anzo delivered the clincher at No. 3, battling back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Three other matches went unfinished. Lingwei Kong was deadlocked at 5-5 in her third set at No. 1 singles, while Natsumi Kurahashi was in the midst of a tiebreaker at No. 2, ahead 6-3, 6-6. Theodora Chantava trailed late in her match at No. 5.

"We're stressing the importance of resolve and relentlessness, and those areas were very good today," Foster said. "Tomorrow will be a quick turnaround, but we're excited for another big test."

The Shockers will stick around Cincinnati for one more day for a matchup with Xavier. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Eastern Hills Tennis Club.
