WICHITA, Kan. – Cold temperatures forced a move indoors and an early morning start time but did little to slow the Wichita State women's tennis team, which soundly defeated visiting Omaha, 6-1, Sunday at Genesis Rock Road.
"We handled the faster indoor courts well," head coach
Colin Foster said. "It was great to get everyone in the lineup for both matches this weekend and make sure everyone is staying sharp as we look forward to another road weekend."
Despite a 9 a.m. first serve, the Shockers (9-8) enjoyed a fast start, winning in straight sets on singles courts 2-6. Their only loss of the day came in a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 1.
Sophomore
Clara Whitaker saw her first singles action of the spring and emerged with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
Likewise, freshman Marlene Förster played her first doubles as a Shocker, teaming with
Jessica Anzo for a 6-1 victory on court No. 3.
"Omaha plays aggressive, energized doubles," Foster said. "But we met and exceeded that energy and played great."
The three Shockers tandems combined to win 17 of the 22 games.
Omaha (4-13) won last year's meeting, 4-3, but was no match for the new-look Shockers, who improved to 6-0 at home.
WSU heads to Cincinnati, Ohio next week for matches against Cincinnati (Friday, Mar. 31, 1 p.m. CT) and Xavier (Saturday, Apr. 1, 11 a.m.) before closing out the regular season at home against Creighton (Saturday, Apr. 15, 1 p.m.).
