WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State wrapped up the Shocker Invitational in dramatic fashion Sunday at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers recorded two wins, both via the walk-off over Northern Colorado (10-1) and South Dakota State (4-3).
Wichita State (23-6) needed only 6.0 innings to take care of Northern Colorado, but were down to the very last out against South Dakota State.
Addison Barnard recorded her 11th career multi-homer game, including home runs No. 60 and 61 of her career in the win over Northern Colorado.
Game 1 vs. Northern Colorado
Barnard recorded her first multi-home run game with two homers and four RBI to lead the offensive attack.
Krystin Nelson tied a career high with three hits, including an RBI.
Lauren Mills homered and walked twice.
Sami Hood hit her second home run of the season and
Lainee Brown recorded the first triple of her career.
Alex Aguilar improved to 5-2 behind 6.0 innings in the circle. She allowed just one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out two.
After a scoreless first inning, Wichita State put three on the board in the second. A solo homer from Mills opened the scoring, and then an error led to two more runs. Back-to-back hits from a Brown triple and Nelson single put the Shockers up 3-0.
Hood kick-started a five-run fourth inning with a solo shot down the left field line. An RBI single from McKinney was immediately followed by the first of two, two-run home runs from Barnard.
Looking for the run-rule win in the fifth, Aguilar faced her only adversity of the game, all with two outs. A double, a walk and a hit by pitch led to a run on a fielding error.
In the sixth, Nelson ripped a one-out single to center to begin the final frame. After a McKinney fielder's choice resulted in a Nelson out at second, Barnard stepped in with sights set on ending it. The second pitch of the at bat was promptly crushed over the fence in left-center.
Game 2 vs. South Dakota State
In the finale, Wichita State faced a 3-1 deficit entering the bottom of the seventh, but recorded its first win of the season after trailing in the seventh. They had been 0-5 entering the day.
South Dakota State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double. Wichita State tied in the third on a
Lauren Lucas RBI single and a Jackrabbit throwing error that sailed into the outfield, allowing Barnard to score.
Neither team would push a run across for three straight innings, until the seventh.
A leadoff solo home run to begin the top of the seventh by Jocelyn Carrillo pushed SDSU in front, 2-1. Carrillo, batting in the 8-hole, was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. A single in the next at bat signaled a pitching change for the Shockers.
Lauren Howell replaced
Alison Cooper in the circle and surrendered an RBI double to the first batter, putting the Jackrabbits up 3-1.
Facing a two-run deficit going into the bottom of the seventh, Wichita State got a single from McKinney with one out, but was thrown out at second on Barnard's grounder to short in the next at bat.
With two outs and a runner on first, the Shockers got three straight singles from Lucas, Jones and Mills. Jones' single brought Barnard in from second to make it 3-2. In a 3-2 count, Mills smoked a single back up the middle, scoring Lucas from third to tie the game at 3-3.
Sedlacek, 0-for-5 on the day, came to the plate with the winning run at second. Down to her final strike, Sedlacek hit a sharp grounder just out of the second baseman's reach, bringing Jones in from second for the winning run.
McKinney had three of Wichita State's 11 hits, while Lucas and Mills had two apiece.
Alison Cooper threw 6.0 strong innings until the seventh. She allowed three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Lauren Howell picked up the win, her 11th of the season, in an inning of relief. She surrendered the lone hit and struck out one.
