WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State went 1-1 on the first day of the Shocker Invitational, defeating Northern Colorado, 6-1, and falling to Minnesota in the nightcap, 5-2, Friday at Wilkins Stadium.
Addison Barnard broke the program's all-time home run record in the first inning vs. Northern Colorado. Her 59 career home runs broke a tie with Madison Perrigan, who set the record in 2021.
Game 1 vs. Northern Colorado
Wichita State had nine hits, including multiple hit games from
Sydney McKinney and
Lainee Brown. Brown doubled twice and scored twice.
Addison Barnard and
Lauren Mills both homered. Rounding out the hits category were
Lauren Lucas,
Taylor Sedlacek and
Krystin Nelson.
Alison Cooper (7-2) allowed the lone run on four hits in 4.0 innings. She struck out two and walked one.
Alex Aguilar was sharp in relief, throwing the final 3.0 innings. Aguilar didn't surrender a hit to go with five strikeouts and just two walks.
Northern Colorado capitalized on a two-out, solo home run in the top of the first to grab an early lead. But, that lead would not make it past the No. 2 spot in the Wichita State lineup. McKinney led off with an infield single, paving the way for Barnard's record-breaking home run.
Nelson tacked on another run to make it 3-1 in the second on an RBI single. Wichita State extended the lead to 4-1 in the third on Mills' monster solo home run.
Wichita State tacked on two more in the fourth on RBI's from Nelson and McKinney, making it 6-1.
Game 2 vs. Minnesota
Wichita State managed just five hits against four Minnesota pitchers.
Zoe Jones had two of those five hits, including a double.
Sydney McKinney,
Lauren Lucas and
Taylor Sedlacek were the only other Shockers to collect a hit.
Lauren Howell (10-2) suffered just her second loss of the season. She only made it through 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits.
Alison Cooper finished the game, giving up only one run on six hits.
Just like in the opener vs. Northern Colorado, Minnesota struck with two outs. A two-out, two-run home run gave the Gophers an early 2-0 lead.
After the Shockers cut the deficit in half, 2-1, Minnesota immediately got that run back on the first pitch of the third inning. A solo home run from the nine-hole hitter made it 3-1.
The Gophers tacked on two more insurance runs on Natalie DenHartog's second home run and a sac fly.
A Sedlacek sac fly in the bottom of the fifth would be the final run of the game. Wichita State left nine on base for the game.
