Payton Tolle stirred up nostalgia last week with his hitting and pitching in a 17-5 win over Oakland at Eck Stadium.
At a school with a rich baseball tradition, Tolle put on a two-way performance to remember. He struck out a career-high 10 hitters and held the Grizzlies to two hits and one run over six innings. He went 5 for 5 at the plate with a home run and double, driving in a career-high six runs.
His afternoon evoked Darren Dreifort, the most prominent former Shocker who won game with his arm and bat. Dreifort pitched for the Shockers from 1991-93 and earned NCAA Player of the Year honors before the Dodgers drafted him No. 2.
While there isn't a multitude of two-way Shockers, Dreifort isn't the only one to take on the demands of hitting and pitching and excel.
Tolle will return to the mound on Saturday in the middle game of a weekend series against Stetson (9-5). The Shockers (6-6) begin the series at 3 p.m. today (Friday).
An unofficial list of some (certainly not all) notable two-way performances by Shockers.
