Sedlacek, Lucas Lift Shockers to Win over Huskers

WICHITA, Kan. – Taylor Sedlacek and Lauren Lucas combined to go 6-for-6, as No. 23 Wichita State hung on for a 10-8 win over Nebraska Friday night at Wilkins Stadium.

Wichita State (17-4) bounced back from being shut out the night before against No. 12 Stanford to earn a big win over a Nebraska team ranked in two polls and receiving votes in the other two.

Lucas was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs. Sedlacek had a career night against her home state. The Nebraska native was 2-for-2 with a home run, two walks and a season-high five RBI.

Sydney McKinney tripled and scored twice, Sami Hood doubled and Zoe Jones had a single to round out the hits.

Alex Aguilar made it only 2.0 innings in the start. She allowed five runs on six hits and two walks. Alison Cooper (6-2) recorded the win in relief, throwing 5.0 innings. She allowed three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks, while striking out two.

After being blanked its last time out, Wichita State didn't waste any time putting a crooked number on the board in the bottom of the first. Four walks, a Nebraska error and a big two-run double from Lucas gave Wichita State a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Two errors in the top of the second cut Wichita State's lead to 3-1.

In the home half of the second, McKinney led off with a triple and turned it into a run on a throwing error from third. That set the tone for the first career grand slam off the bat of Sedlacek, putting Wichita State up 8-1.

That seven-run cushion quickly evaporated behind a four-run top of the third for the Huskers. The first five Huskers reached on three singles, a walk and a double.

The two teams traded a run in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth. Wichita State scored a run on a fielder's choice double play and Nebraska answered with a solo homer.

Hood made it 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double into the right-center gap.

Needing just three outs with a four-run cushion, Wichita State made it interesting in the top of the seventh. A leadoff single paved the way for Talia Tokheim's second home run of the night, cutting the lead to 10-8.

Another single, followed by a fielder's choice and a walk, put runners on first and second with one out. Caitlynn Neal hit a laser on a 1-0 pitch to Hood at second who snagged the line drive and doubled up the runner on first to end the game.
