Shockers Bounce Back; Beat LA Tech

TULSA, Okla. – A little Vitamin D and a few extra wins both did wonders for the collective mood within the Wichita State women's tennis program.

Competing outdoors for the first time this spring, the Shockers pushed away Louisiana Tech, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in a neutral site dual at Oral Roberts University's Bernis Duke Tennis Complex.

"For our first outdoor match, I was impressed with how quickly we acclimated," head coach Colin Foster said. "In the doubles, there were a few misses early, but then we really locked in. "

WSU (5-2) secured the doubles point along with matches at Nos. 2-6 singles to hand LA Tech (6-2) just its second loss.

The effort came less than 24 hours after a narrow 4-3 setback against conference rival Tulsa.

"We talked after the match yesterday about trusting our choices and staying aggressive at deuce," Foster said. "Today we did that. We won a lot of close sets and were pushed on every court. It was a great bounce-back performance after a tough and physical match yesterday."

Up 1-0 heading into singles, the Shockers upped their lead to 3-1 when Natsumi Kurahashi (4-2 this spring) and Kristina Kudryavtseva (6-1) both won in straight sets.

Theodora Chantava (5-1) survived a first-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles to win 7-6(3), 6-2 and officially clinch the dual.

Lingwei Kong (5-2) and Harriet Hamilton (4-0) each battled back from first-set losses to win their respective matches in 10-point tiebreakers and push the final margin to 6-1.

On court No. 6, Hamilton played with her back to the wall for the better part of half-an-hour, winning consecutive tiebreakers to complete a 5-7, 7-6 (3), (10-5) comeback victory.

The Shockers return to the state of Oklahoma next weekend for duals against Oklahoma State (Friday, 5 p.m. CT) and South Carolina (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) at OSU's Greenwood Tennis Center.
