TULSA, Okla. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team came within a bounce of besting Tulsa on its home court but instead fell by a 4-3 margin Saturday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Complex
 
The Shockers (4-2) conceded the doubles point and lost in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to put themselves in a perilous position, needing to sweep all four remaining matches.
 
They very nearly did it.
 
Kristina Kudryavtseva, Theodora Chantava and Harriet Hamilton picked up wins on courts 4-6, but Tulsa's Lily Hutchings overcame an 0-6, 2-5 deficit at No. 3 to save the match for the Hurricane.
 
"I was proud of our effort," head coach Colin Foster said. "In doubles we got a little behind and just couldn't quite get back to even. In singles, we're creating chances on every court. Unfortunately, we just couldn't get that fourth point. But I'm so encouraged by the progress that we're making."
 
Tulsa, last year's American Athletic Conference runner-up and a participant in last month's prestigious ITA Kickoff Weekend, improved to 7-3.
 
The Shockers will look to build on their performance Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) on these same courts against a Louisiana Tech team that comes in with a 6-1 record.
 
"Now the challenge is for everyone to be ready to go tomorrow and to enjoy but also seize the opportunity at hand," Foster said.
