Shockers Suffer First Loss on Final Day in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A seven-run third inning for Texas State proved to be the deciding factor in a 7-4 loss for Wichita State Sunday afternoon.

Wichita State suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.

Sydney McKinney recorded her fourth multi-hit game of the season behind a 2-for-3 day. Lauren Lucas added another double and two RBI to her impressive start. Through five games she has six doubles and 12 RBI. Lainee Brown hit her first home run of the season.

Lauren Howell lasted only 2.0 innings in the start. She allowed four runs on two hits and a walk. Alex Aguilar replaced Howell in that third inning and even though she allowed three runs on four hits, shut down the Bobcats the rest of the way. Texas State had just one baserunner the rest of the game after the third inning.

After two scoreless innings, Wichita State opened the scoring in the top of the third. The Shockers put their first two runners on via a Hood double and McKinney walk. Barnard moved the runners up with a sac bunt, which promptly led to white-hot Lucas ripping her sixth double of the weekend into the left-center gap. Both runners came across to give Wichita State an early 2-0 lead.

Just after Wichita State seized some momentum, Texas State took it right away. The Bobcats put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Two errors and a hit batter saw the inning get away from Wichita State.

Brown's solo home run in the fourth and Zoe Jones' RBI single in the fifth would be as close as they would come.
