Shockers Fade Down the Stretch, Drop Season Opener to No. 23 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – Despite a strong first-half effort, Wichita State fell 92-68 to No. 23-ranked Oklahoma Monday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center.

DJ McCarty and Tre'Zure Jobe combined for over half of Wichita State's scoring, putting up 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Oklahoma (1-0) shot 56% from the field with a 35% three-point percentage and won the rebound battle, 50-29, while the Shockers (0-1) scored 22 points off 26 forced OU turnovers.

Jobe went on a 5-0 run by herself to start the game, and the Shockers forced 17 turnovers to lead by as many as nine points before Oklahoma made it a three-point game by the end of the quarter.

The Sooners claimed their first lead of the game halfway through the second quarter, but Wichita State wasn't going anywhere as McCarty scored seven of the Shockers' last 10 points of the half before Jobe hit a buzzer-beater three before halftime.

McCarty (16) and Jobe (12) put up a total of 28 first-half points, giving the Shockers a four-point lead at the half.

It was all Oklahoma on offense coming out of the break as the Sooners outscored the Shockers 35-11 in the third quarter.

McCarty picked up her fourth foul with 2:50 to play in the third quarter, and Ornella Niankan fouled out shortly after.

Wichita State was unable to gain momentum to overcome the deficit in the fourth quarter as the Sooners seemed to have an answer for everything, never letting their lead drop below 16.

Oklahoma's Aubrey Joens couldn't miss in the fourth quarter, shooting 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from behind the arc to seal the deal, ending the game with 19 points and six rebounds.

Raissa Nsabua found her stride late in the game, scoring a career-high seven points in the final three minutes of the game.

Jobe continued to be a difference-maker on defense, tying for a game-high 4 steals.

Daniela Abies recorded a team-high six rebounds and tallied seven points, and true freshman Salese Blow scored nine points in her official collegiate debut.
