Career Nights Fuel High-Scoring Victory Over Omaha

WICHITA – Three Shockers scored career highs en route to Wichita State's 92-86 victory over Omaha Monday evening in Charles Koch Arena.

Freshman Salese Blow led the scoring with a career-high 19 points, while sophomore Daniela Abies put up a career-high 18 points and 8 rebounds, and junior Ornella Niankan tallied a career-high 16 points with 5 rebounds and a career-high 5 assists.

"It was a big-time team effort," head coach Terry Nooner said. "We showed a lot of grit in the second half and especially in the fourth quarter dealing with some tough fouls and foul trouble throughout the game, but it's always good even when you feel like you don't play your best basketball that you can pull out a win. We'd rather have wins than moral victory losses."

Abies tied with Jeniah Thompson to the team in rebounding for the third time this season, but foul trouble kept her out of the game for half of the second, third and fourth quarters before she eventually fouled out with 2:21 left in the game.

"Dani did a good job in the first half of setting the tone of scoring on the inside and getting rebounds, which we made a really big point of emphasis," Nooner said.

Abies scored 10 first-half points, and DJ McCarty scored all nine of her points in the first half, but the Mavericks had the advantage going into halftime with a three-point lead.

Wichita State tied it up three times and took the lead twice in the third quarter before Omaha went on 5-0 run and finished the quarter with a six-point lead.

The Shockers saved their best quarter for last, outscoring Omaha 29-17 and winning the rebound battle 12-7 to secure their redemption victory after falling to the Mavericks in overtime a season ago.

Wichita State recorded its best field goal percentage of the season, shooting 56% and going 17-26 (65%) in the second half.

All 12 Shockers who suited up saw the court, as Sophia Goncalves made her collegiate debut, recording a big block right after she entered the game at the end of the second quarter.

Tre'Zure Jobe marked the fourth Shocker in double figures, coming alive and scoring 13 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Wichita State improves to 2-2 as the Mavericks fall to 1-4.

The Shockers will take a holiday trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., where they will take on Akron and Dayton in the Daytona Beach Classic starting Friday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. on FloHoops.com.
