Box Score STILLWATER, Okla. – The Wichita State men's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional Championships this past week at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Alejandro Jacomeadvanced into the singles quarterfinals and the duo of Jacome and
Kristof Minarik battled their way to the doubles quarterfinals.
Head coach Darragh Glavin was pleased with his team's results this week.
"It was a good experience overall for us," said Glavin. "We had some positive results and saw some improvements that the guys have made since the start of fall."
Jacome became the second Shocker in two years to advance into the singles quarterfinals at Central Regionals. He won his first four matches before falling in the quarterfinals to Arda Azkara of the University of New Mexico, 1-6, 1-6.
"He [Jacome] has been putting in a lot of work and it's great to see him improving and getting the results we know he can have," said Glavin. "Beating a player he lost to a couple of months ago was a highlight and we know there is lots more to come from him this year."
Additionally in the singles bracket,
Luke Bracks won his first two matches before falling in the round of 32, 3-6, 0-6.
Minarik collected one win before bowing out in the round of 32.
Vanja Hodzic won his first match before also falling in the round of 32.
Marcelo Sepulveda fell in the round of 64 after a win in the opening round.
Richey King and
Misha Kvantaliani both lost in their opening matches.
In doubles, the duo of Minarik and Jacome collected two wins before losing a competitive match to Creighton duo Alejandro Gandini and Matthew Lanahan, 3-8.
"We changed some team around at the last minute and it was great to see [Alejandro] and Kristof respond and play at a high level," said Glavin. "They ran into a team playing at a higher level at the moment and they were just better on Saturday, but it was overall a good tournament for us with some good doubles play."
The other Shocker duos of King/Hodzic and Kvantaliani/Sepulveda before each duo dropped their round of 64 match.
The Shockers will conclude their fall season at the Bonita Bay Classic in Bonita Bay, Florida from Nov. 3-5.
