LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Newcomer
Jessica Anzo reeled off five-straight victories to win the second-place playoff at last week's PTT $25k Lawrence, played at the University of Kansas' Jayhawks Tennis Center.
Â
Anzo – a transfer from Texas A&M – dropped her first match in round-robin play but bounced back with victories over opponents from Belmont and Kansas State to finish runner-up in her group. She picked up three more wins in the second-place playoff – the last in three sets over KU's Mariana Manyoma Velasquez, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
Â
"Jessica competes so well and has a great sense of what tactics and style to use in each situation, based on the score and playing style of her opponent," head coach
Colin Foster said. "These PTT events are well-run and the level of competition is extremely high. Everyone is guaranteed three matches, which is so useful this early in the season."
Â
Teammate Lingwei Kong also competed, finishing 1-2 in her group.
Four other Shockers will compete this weekend at the Tulsa Invite, Friday through Sunday, in Tulsa, Okla.
